FUAM students protest and shutdown

The entire students of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi have been asked to vacate the school premises after a staged protest over the death of two students who were knocked down and killed by a commercial bus Makurdi.

The students protested because one student, Joseph Odeh died in the school’s clinic after the health workers refused to treat him and other injured students. They alleged that the nurses were demanding the students’ card before treatment. Joseph died in the ensuing argument, which triggered the protest.

According to the report by News Agency of Nigeria, the school’s information’s Officer, Mrs. Rosemary Waku, said: “The management reviewed the situation and resolved to close the school before the protest snowballs into something uncontrollable.”

She also said the incident is “regrettable” while explaining that the deaths occurred last week Wednesday after a commercial vehicle conveying students to school had a burst tyre, veered off its lane and hit two students on a motorcycle. The two students were said to have died immediately.

Six others were said to be critically injured and now receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Center, Makurdi. The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof A.R. Kimbir, assure them that the school will take care of their bills.
