My review is based on my time at UNIBEN before 2011. Feel free to state how much has changed (or not) in the comments below.

As far as Nigerian universities are concerned, UNIBEN is a great school to go to. It has it’s quirks, of course (where won’t you find any?) but it seems to make up for it in school fees and with the community of faculty, staff and students within it’s walls. In my opinion, it has a nice balance of the Nigerian experience within a small area of Benin City, Edo State.

Quality of academics depends greatly on lecturers employed. While some departments are fortunate enough to have seasoned lecturers with CONFIRMED Doctorates and PhDs, some others are stuck with former students turned lecturers who don’t have a full grasp of the topic they are teaching. There is also the fear of ASUU strikes to brace oneself for and as if that isn’t bad enough, non-teaching staff also have a union.

While I was at UNIBEN (before 2011), it’s online student portal was a complication I always hoped would be resolved for students’ convenience.
