There is a saying that one should dress the way he would be addressed. But that seems to be a major issue in Nigerian campus as students crave for the freedom to dress the way they want without being addressed inappropriately.
In some campuses, “Indecent” dressing has been linked to sexual harassment and there has been calls for dress codes in tertiary institutions. Some, in fact, especially private universities and University if Ilorin among others have applied dress codes to check what is termed immoral and unethical dressing among female students. This does not go down well with many of the students.
Recently, the National President, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Usman Dutse, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, in Lagos, called for the re-introduction of dress code in tertiary institutions.
According to the ASUP, “some students deliberately dress awkwardly to classes and thereby provoke their male colleagues and lecturers”.
Further, he said “Dress code will check the excesses of female students in all institutions and will compel them to dress properly at all times to avoid sexual harassment and rape.
This brings us to our question, on which we want you to share your VIEW: SHOULD DRESS CODE BE ENFORCED IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS TO AVOID RAPE OR SEXUAL HARRASSMENT?
